Aston Villa could return to Southampton for the centre-back, Jack Stephens, according to the Daily Mirror (July 2, page 49).
Villa are said to have paid around £15 million to sign another Southampton defender, the left-back, Matt Targett.
But after losing two key centre-backs, Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings, at the end of last season, Aston Villa still have gaps to fill ahead of their Premier League return.
And while Tuanzebe and Mings have each been linked with returns to Villa Park, it would be wise to seek alternatives - with Stephens fitting the bill.
Stephens played 24 times as Southampton survived the drop last season.
But with three years left on his contract he, like Targett, is unlikely to come cheap.
The 25-year-old moved to Southampton from Plymouth Argyle at the start of the decade, and was loaned to Swindon Town, Middlesbrough and Coventry City before breaking in at Saints.
Would Stephens be a good addition for Aston Villa?
