Explained: Why Bethany wasn’t sucked into Jumanji: The Next Level!

Jumanji: The Next Level may look great but audiences are still wondering what happened to Bethany.

Few family films of the nineties felt as refreshing or frightening as 1995's Jumanji. Starring the great Robin Williams, the adventure flick is regarded by many as a nostalgic modern classic; it remains an absolute pleasure and a treasure to revisit.

Williams fans, in particular, were baffled when a sequel was announced, as 2005's Zathura: A Space Adventure wasn't exactly a triumph. The actor passed away in 2014, and without him, many were disinterested in a franchise continuation.

Then, it arrived, and majority audiences were pleasantly surprised with the results.

We didn't see that coming...

Interestingly, 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the year's biggest hits, securing significant box-office and sustained buzz.

Sure, it received middling reviews from critics, but to this day it boasts an admirable 7.0 on IMDb. Its cast played a huge role in its fortune; with the likes of Dwayne Johnson (Rampage), Kevin Hart (Ride Along), Karen Gillan (Avengers: Endgame) and Jack Black (Goosebumps) starring, it proved to be quite the irresistible blockbuster.

Inevitably, production soon kickstarted on a sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. Check out the great first trailer below:

What happened to Bethany?

Madison Iseman (Annabelle Comes Home) played Bethany in Welcome to the Jungle and does, in fact, appear early on in the sequel trailer. However, when it comes to entering the game once again, it appears she's left behind.

Martha (Morgan Turner) enters, portrayed by Gillan in the game. Bethany, on the other hand, was played in the game by Jack Black in the previous film, which is fitting considering Iseman and Black both starred in Goosebumps together.

Why wasn't she sucked into the game? Well, it's because Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain) was instead, and is now the one trapped inside Black's explorer avatar this time around.

With Bethany sitting this one out, it seems, there are a few new additions in place. Essentially, we have Dwayne Johnson unleashing his inner Danny DeVito (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Kevin Hart taking on Danny Glover (Sorry To Bother You).

Jumanji: The Next Level release date

It looks like an absolute blast, and with all of these aforementioned stars in the cast, it may just be one of the year's must-see movies.

UK audiences can join in the adventure on Friday, December 13th 2019. Stay tuned for more updates!
