The character is one of the most iconic in comic-book history, but is Spider-Man Jewish?

Spider-Man is many things: heroic, charming, brave… Jewish?

Many are asking whether he could be as Spider-Man: Far From Home soars into cinemas. We’ve seen many on-screen portrayals of the beloved web-slinger, but Tom Holland’s latest has arguably been the best.

He first appeared in Captain America: Civil War and was soon rewarded with his own solo-venture, Spider-Man: Homecoming. It went down a treat, and it seems the MCU has finally found the perfect Spidey.

An interesting question

Although the majority are knowledgeable when it comes to his character, a few unexpected questions have surfaced.

Perhaps the most notable is this: Is Spider-Man Jewish? Admittedly, it does seem like a very random thing to ask, as it doesn’t exactly feel integral to the plot of the films he features in.

However, there’s actually a reason some are asking it…

Is Spider-Man Jewish?

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, when Peter B. Parker recounts his marriage and divorce to Mary Jane Watson, a flashback of the wedding reveals him stepping on a glass. Seems a pretty big indicator, right? Not exactly.

According to Forward, co-director Rodney Rothman told Vulture that “I happen to have a personal conviction, for many reasons, that Peter B. Parker is likely Jewish.”

However, he adds that “…because this is an alternate universe, we just don’t know. It could be that Buddhists step on glass. It could be that M.J. is Jewish and Peter converted.”

Co-director Peter Ramsey also weighed in; “It could be, maybe that’s not a glass!” Essentially, there’s no concrete answer – simply, it’s possible that a Jewish Spider-Man exists out there, somewhere.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

So, there is a reason people are wondering whether Spider-Man is Jewish after all.

It’s just that, in the previously explored 2018 hit, a number of Spider-Men exist and there are plenty more possibilities.

As for the MCU’s Peter Parker, it’s safe to say that the answer is no, or rather, there’s no reason to believe that he is.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is in cinemas Tuesday, 2nd July 2019.
