Kortney Hause and Matt Targett will be battling for that left-back spot next season after Aston Villa signed him up from Southampton.

Kortney Hause welcomed Aston Villa's new signing Matt Targett to the club by stating that he is a 'player' on Instagram following his move from Southampton.

Villa confirmed on their official Twitter account on Monday afternoon that left-back Targett has made the switch from the South Coast to the Midlands this summer after signing on the dotted line.

And, versatile defender Hause, who also penned a permanent contract at the Midlands club last month, sent this one-word message to him from his personal Instagram account when his signing was announced.

Depending on Dean Smith's thinking, Hause could be in competition with Targett next season because the former Wolves man was deployed at left-back last term.

Hause is a natural centre-back, but it could be argued that he produced his best form in the fullback area rather than when he played at the heart of Villa's defence.

Either way, Smith finally has options in that area now because Targett, Neil Taylor and Hause can all deploy that role, as Villa's team is now beginning to shape up.

Added with Targett, Hause and winger Anwar El Ghazi completed permanent deals to the club following their successful loan spells, whilst playmaker Jota and club-record signing Wesley also joined the club.

There's no doubt that Villa will be adding more players to their squad before the Premier League season starts, as Smith has been tasked with facing Champions League finalists Tottenham on the opening day.

Villa's first home game back in England's top-flight will be against Eddie Howe's free-scoring Bournemouth side.
