Middlesbrough have been keeping a close eye on Southend United midfielder Dru Yearwood for a number of years and, according to the Northern Echo, they are hoping to finally sign the youngster this summer.
Despite being just 19, Yearwood is already one of the most important and influential players at Roots Hall. He made a staggering 61 appearances in all competitions last season as Southend managed to just about stave off relegation to League Two.
But the chances of Yearwood playing his football in Southend colours next season look slim.
The Northern Echo claims that Middlesbrough are looking to snap up a player they’ve been aware off for a long time now. The North East outfit watched the Harlow-born teenager in action against Sunderland recently and he caught the eye with a dominant display in the centre of the park.
And the door looks open with rival suitors Rotherham United failing to secure a deal for Yearwood, having seen a £150,000 bid turned down.
“I have a young player in Dru Yearwood who I have to say surprised me,” former Southend boss Chris Powell told Echo News earlier in the year.
“I had seen him two days in training but I decided put him in and I definitely think there’s a player there, I really do.”
Whether Middlesbrough are the right club for Yearwood to fitful his potential remains to be seen. They will have a new direction and a new style under Jonathan Woodgate but time will tell what that is.
