Real Betis flyer Junior Firpo shone as Spain battered France at the European Championships, but is he moving to the Premier League with Liverpool?

You would have been forgiven for thinking Spain had sneakily smuggled Jordi Alba into their U21 squad during Thursday’s 4-1 thrashing of France in the semi-finals.

But it wasn’t the Barcelona star who ripped Sylvain Ripol’s defence apart again and again. Instead, Real Betis flyer Junior Firpo has just announced himself as one of the most exciting young full-backs in European football – even if he did gift France the lead with a silly foul in the box early on.

The 22-year-old recovered from that early mistake by producing a tireless performance on the flank, racing in behind a suspect back line again and again. If Spain had a natural centre-forward on the pitch, Firpo surely would have ended the last-four meeting with an assist or two.

And, on this evidence, it is no wonder that Jurgen Klopp wants to add the Dominican-born left-back to his swashbuckling squad.

According to the Estadio Deportivo, Liverpool are keen to bring Firpo to Anfield this summer though he’d be a costly investment with a £45 million release clause in his contract (AS).

Yet it seems that a number of Liverpool fans think he is worth the risk on last night’s evidence.
