It was reported earlier this month that Aston Villa had seen an £8 million offer for Etheridge rejected by Cardiff (Express and Star), whose manager, Neil Warnock, later insisted the Bluebirds had received no contact over that particular player (BBC).
In between, it was claimed that Etheridge, who is also said to be interesting Liverpool, would be keen on a move to Villa Park (Wales Online) - preferring that to joining the reigning European champions.
And it has since been suggested the Villans are being priced out of a deal for the Phillippines international (The Sun).
The Bluebirds already employ Alex Smithies in the pair's position, a player for whom they paid QPR £3.6 million to sign a year ago.
And with Day now on board, they may be more inclined to part with Etheridge - should an acceptable offer arrive.
It might just be the signal Aston Villa required to test the water in Wales.
Aston Villa, Cardiff, neither? Where will Etheridge start the new season?
