The Hammers are batting away interest in star centre back Issa Diop, so may well be looking at potential replacements, or even just a younger option to replace either Angelo Ogbonna or Winston Reid.
A couple of options have been linked so far, and one key name is Kabak, with The Guardian recently claiming that the Hammers are interested in the Turkish centre back due to a €15million (£13.4million) release clause after Stuttgart's relegation.
Now, it's believed that Schalke are making a move for Kabak, but West Ham have made contact with his representatives to discuss a potential move to the London Stadium.
Kabak, 19, only joined Stuttgart from Galatasaray in January, but his outstanding displays saw him win the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award after just a matter of months in Germany.
The defender would be a superb signing for West Ham; a real bargain at just £13.4million, with Kabak emerging as one of the top teenage centre backs in Europe.
Schalke may have struggled last season, but they do represent a real threat to West Ham. Kabak only upped sticks from Turkey to Germany in January, and making another jump to England may be a concern.
Schalke can offer him a stay in Germany and a little stability, but West Ham will hope that by making contact about a deal, they have a real shot at signing him.
