The 30-year-old is looking for a new club after being released by Athletic Bilbao, where he played under the veteran Argentine coach.
AS reported Leeds' interest in him a few months ago and, if this afternoon's report from Spain is accurate, Iturraspe may be up for a stint in West Yorkshire.
Thing is, Bielsa already has a better midfielder than Iturraspe - Kalvin Phillips.
The 23-year-old was nothing short of outstanding for United last season and this is a player who's only going to get much better going forward.
Iturraspe is free, but he would be one of Leeds' top earners and there's no sense in committing to a major financial obligation over a two or three-year period unless that player is going to play every week and, well, he wouldn't.
The problem is that both Phillips and Iturraspe are defensive midfielders, and both don't fit into Bielsa's system. It's Phillips's shirt to lose and, based on last season and his ongoing development, the former Bilbao star isn't going to displace him.
Maybe if the Aston Villa-linked midfielder leaves then Bielsa should go for Iturraspe. Until then, the 63-year-old coach shouldn't be bombarding the Spaniard's phone. He doesn't need him.
