It’s been a box office phenomenon, but is Avengers: Endgame the highest grossing movie yet?
When fans took to their seats at midnight on the opening night of Avengers: Endgame, they couldn’t have imagined just how emotionally exhausted they’d be in three hours time.
The highly anticipated MCU extravaganza hit like a sledgehammer in so many ways. Ensnaring audiences from its mournful opening sequence up until its tender final moments, Endgame immediately stood out as the most ambitious blockbuster of recent memory – perhaps even further.
It is the culmination of over a decade’s worth of cinematic innovation, and miraculously, it shows. So, how much has it achieved already?
Are we in the endgame?
When the film finally arrived in April, it shattered presale and box office opening records, which encouraged many to look back and consider the highest grossing movies of all time.
Fans predicted that Marvel Studios would have a colossal hit on their hands, but the rapid financial success of the film was almost unprecedented.
Since its initial release, many have inevitably lost track of its box office figures. Has it taken the top spot?
Is Avengers: Endgame the highest grossing movie?
According to Box Office Mojo, the MCU masterclass is still playing second fiddle to James Cameron’s 2009 epic, Avatar.
However, it’s a seriously close race right now.
Endgame has currently grossed a whopping $2,749.6 and counting. Cameron’s 3D feast boasts an immense $2,788.0, so the MCU heavy-hitter is still roughly $40 million away from dethroning the reigning champion.
Does it still have a shot?
As reported by IGN, a re-release of the film is on the way with additional content. The source notes that while it’s not an extended cut, it will include a variety of post-credits extras, ranging from deleted scenes to mysterious surprises.
Although the theatrical run is yet to cease, this re-release is sure to lure many more fans back into the cinemas to consume everything that Endgame has to offer.
It’s not quite there yet, but soon, we could very well be declaring Avengers: Endgame the highest grossing movie of all time.
