Bristol City may sell star winger Callum O’Dowda this summer.

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has told Bristol Live that winger Callum O’Dowda may have to be moved on this summer given concerns about his contract.

O’Dowda, 24, hit four goals and four assists in 31 games last season, impressing again for the Robins having starred since joining from Oxford United in 2016.

The Irishman continues to feature as an important player for Johnson, but Bristol City must now think about O’Dowda’s future at Ashton Gate this summer.

O’Dowda is out of contract next summer, and Johnson has now admitted that if O’Dowda doesn’t sign a new deal, then he will be sold – as long as it’s right for the football club.

“I don’t know is the honest answer. I’ve said before that the door is always open – there is no issue with Callum on a personal and a professional level,” said Johnson. “ He’s a player that I want to do well. We have to do the right thing. And if the player’s not going to sign a new contract then we’ve got to move him on.”

“The most important thing is that they want to play for Bristol City – that’s the key. We want players who want to be here. I’m not saying that Callum doesn’t want to be here but I know that his head would have been turned by the speculation. Whatever happens we’ve got to to do what’s right for Callum and what’s right for the football club,” he added.

A host of Championship clubs would no doubt love to have O’Dowda in their ranks, and Johnson’s comments may just give Leeds something to think about.

Leeds wanted O’Dowda in January, but The Mirror claim that they’ve so far ruled out a new move to bring him to Elland Road.

Yet with three wingers wanted, and former top target Daniel James off the market, O’Dowda may look appealing once again, and they should at least give new consideration to the Irishman this summer.

O’Dowda is quick, skilful and may fit well into Bielsa’s style, and with the Robins under more pressure to sell than they were in January, it would be wise to perform a U-turn and try again, even if only as an alternative target to Jack Harrison and Helder Costa.
