Aston Villa are on red alert as Tom Heaton rejects a new contract at Burnley, according to The Mirror (20 June, page 57).
It is no secret that Aston Villa want to sign a proven, reliable goalkeeper after sealing their return to the Premier League. Lovre Kalinic has been nothing short of a disaster since his £7 million January switch from Genk while there are also doubts about Norwegian international Orjan Nyland and play-off hero Jed Steer.
Villa have been linked with the likes of Jack Butland and Neil Etheridge in recent weeks but signing them would be both costly and difficult, given the amount of rival interest.
Heaton, then, might just have answered Aston Villa’s prayers.
The 33-year-old remains one of the top flight’s most dependable shot-stoppers and it was his remarkable displays in the second half of the season which dragged Burnley clear of a relegation dog fight.
Though Heaton’s time at Turf Moor could be coming to an end as he rejects the chance to extend a contract which will expire in 2020. And The Mirror reports that Aston Villa, as well as Borunemouth, are ready to take full advantage.
And so they should. Heaton would walk into Dean Smith’s starting XI and, at 33 and with 12 months left on his deal, he should be far cheaper than the alternatives.
This is not the first time Heaton has been linked with The Express claiming that he was set to join on loan in January.
