Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min has issued an apology to his teammates due to him being unavailable for the start of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign through suspension (official club website).

The Spurs forward was sent off in the 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth in May (BBC Sport) and served part of his ban in the season finale against Everton.

However, the suspension is being carried over, so Son will also be absent for the first two games of the upcoming campaign, at home to Aston Villa and away at Manchester City.

Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League in 2018-19 and also reached the Champions League final, capping off a solid season for the fan favourite, who also won gold with South Korea in the Asian Games.

With much to build on for the upcoming season, the 26-year-old told the Spurs website that he and his teammates learned a lot from the campaign just gone and want more next season, with the real belief that the team has “a good chance to do something”.

Looking ahead to the Villa game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Son added: “It will be a very exciting game for us and Villa as well. We’ll look forward to playing our first game of the new season at our new stadium. That will be a special day.

“Obviously I’m suspended. That’s tough for me because I want to play every game and I’m sorry for the team because I’ll miss two games.”

Son, whose 188 appearances for Spurs have yielded 67 goals and 36 assists (Transfermarkt), will be available for the home game against Newcastle United.
