Derby County may have found their ideal successor to Frank Lampard as Charlton Athletic’s official website confirm Lee Bowyer is leaving the club after failing to agree on a new contract.

The Rams are used to having managerial upheaval at this time of the year. For the past six successive seasons, the Midlands club have incredibly started the new campaign with a different manager.

Most Derby supporters are desperate for Lampard to remain at Pride Park. However, he is reportedly being lined up for the Chelsea job following Maurizio Sarri’s return to Italy with Juventus.

The gap between Champions League Chelsea and Championship Derby is huge. Even the most ardent Rams fan can’t deny the step-up. If Chelsea come calling, Lampard will surely go to his beloved Blues.

But the latest news from The Valley could offer Derby a very welcoming plan B. Bowyer has done a terrific job at Charlton, guiding the club to promotion last season as The Addicks defeated Sunderland in the payoff final.

Few expected a promotion to happen at Charlton as they barely had a first-team squad to choose from this time last year. But Bowyer pieced together a young, vibrant team capable of playing excellent football.

A recent report in the Daily Mail claimed Derby had made discreet enquiries about Bowyer as they fear Lampard’s departure. The former Leeds man seems like a natural successor as he shares many of the same values as a manager – eye-catching football and a bid to utilise the club’s youth academy.

The Lampard saga still promises to have twist and turns as Derby owner Mel Morris confirmed no approach has yet come from Chelsea for the 40-year-old, but the Bowyer news will certainly stoke the fire.
