James Tavernier of Rangers
Weir worked with Rangers right-back Tavernier during his time as assistant manager at Ibrox, and he believes that the former Newcastle United right-back is good enough to play in England.
Weir told The Scottish Sun about Tavernier: “There’s no doubt James could go and play down in England. He is athletic, his final product is top class and he’s done it consistently. He has great quality and is a great person, too.
“He’s handled playing for Rangers when it has been difficult. He’s come through all the criticism, handled it and kept playing.”
Encouraging for Aston Villa
According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa are interested in signing Tavernier from Rangers in the summer transfer window.
The Villans will play in the Premier League next season, and Dean Smith’s side could do with a dynamic and skilful right-back like Tavernier.
There will always be scepticism when a player from the Scottish top flight is signed by a club in the second tier of English football or in the Premier League, but Weir’s aforementioned comments suggest Villa need not have any concerns about Tavernier.
According to The Scottish Sun, Tavernier is rated at £10 million by Rangers.
