The pacey Pilgrims forward scored 19 goals last term but could not prevent their relegation from League One.
As reported in Chronicle Live, the 26-year-old had an impressive season on a personal level for the Pilgrims, weighing in with 19 goals in all competitions, although unfortunately he could not prevent their relegation from League One.
The same outlet says the Black Cats have shown interest in Ladapo this year, seeing an offer rejected in January and keeping an eye out on him this summer following the Devon club's relegation to League Two.
However, it does also report that the Wearsiders must act quickly if they are to secure his services as Portsmouth, as well as another as-yet unnamed League One side, are understood to have agreed fees with Plymouth, rumoured to be £400,000 - lower than Chronicle Live's earlier report of a £500,000 fee being nearly agreed between Sunderland and Plymouth.
Here is what some Sunderland fans on the social media platform thought of the transfer report linking them with the 6ft (1.83m) ace:
Would hopefully give us a different outlet a bit pace to stretch teams and get behind them— Steven Elliott (@ElliottSAFC) 14 June 2019
He would be an excellent signing plenty of pace— Safc phil corcoran⚪️⚪️ (@cockneymackem) 14 June 2019
We would only brake him, look what happened to altidore, Wyke and grigg— daz ftm safc (@themackem) 14 June 2019
Probably will be used as a left winger for most of the season, it's what normally happens when we sign a striker with pace. But he should be a good signing liked him a lot when we played Plymouth(A). #safc— Jordan Ramsey (@RamseySAFC) 14 June 2019
Cracking signing, the goals he got in a relegated team so hopefully with a better team if we get him will add them to us— Andy Barron (@shortsbarron) 14 June 2019
If we Sign Freddie Ladapo we'll have a striker who scored 30 daft goals in the league two seasons ago and one that got 18 last season— Lewis McDermott (@modmcdermott) 14 June 2019
Watch them Both battle it out to score 7 goals this season
Would be happy with him if true— Steven Elliott (@ElliottSAFC) 14 June 2019
500k for Ladapo is a bargain ⚪️⚪️— George (@SafcGeorge6) 14 June 2019
Just checked that Ladapo on YouTube and if rumours are true we in for him then he could be good for us. Looks to have pace and knows where the goal is.— Kev Taylor (@SuperkevFTM) 14 June 2019
Grigg, Ladapo, Shankland and Wyke are good enough to get us in the championship. #SAFC— TheRokerEnd (@TheRokerEnd) 14 June 2019
Sunderland are also reported by the Scottish Sun to have offered a contract to Lawrence Shankland, who scored 34 goals in all competitions for Scottish Championship side Ayr United last season and is now a free agent.
