Southampton are reluctant to let left-back Matt Targett leave amid interest from Aston Villa, The Daily Echo report.
The report states Southampton's preference would be to sell Ryan Bertrand, with the defender not likely to renew his contract.
This presents an unexpected opportunity for Villa, the chance to re-sign Bertrand after a previous loan spell at the club.
Southampton aren't actively shopping Bertrand, but he seems more 'gettable' than Targett going off The Daily Echo's report.
Bertrand spent the second half of the 2013/14 season at Aston Villa, making 16 appearances for the club.
The Mirror reported at the time that Bertrand was open to joining the club on a permanent basis.
Southampton ended up winning the race, perhaps impressed by his Villa performances.
Given the upheaval at Villa since and the consistency Southampton have enjoyed, it was a good move from the left-back.
Now if Villa are trying to upgrade, Bertrand would be a terrific option at 29.
They would have to make a substantial offer to the Saints, he is still their first choice over Targett.
But if there is a chance he could be available, then Villa should test the waters.
