Report: Newcastle offered second chance to sign Lazio's Jordan Lukaku

Premier League outfit Newcastle United reportedly turned down Belgian left-back Lukaku in January.

Newcastle United could be offered a second chance to sign Jordan Lukaku from Lazio, according to Il Messaggero, despite rejecting the Belgium international as recently as January.

You might have heard that The Magpies need a left-back. The club’s long-standing problem position remains as big of an issue as ever with Antonio Barreca returning to Monaco after an ill-fated loan spell at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are starting from square one yet again then and reports from Italy claim that Lazio are hoping to take full advantage by offering Lukaku to Rafa Benitez’s side.

Though there are two main reasons why Newcastle will probably turn down such a chance.

One: Lukaku could be offered as a makeweight in a deal that would see club captain Jamaal Lascelles leave Tyneside to join Lazio this summer.

And, two: Newcastle backed out of a deal to sign Lukaku just five months ago. According to The Chronicle, The Magpies were on the verge of signing the Antwerp-born 24-year-old, only to back out of a deal due to the defender’s injury problems.

Considering that Lukaku missed the last 18 games of the Serie A campaign, it’s pretty clear that Newcastle made the right decision.

So don’t expect Lukaku to finally pull on the black and white stripes this summer.
