According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic want to sign Phil Jagielka, and Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers should join the race for the departing Everton defender.

Jagielka is leaving Everton this summer and is available this summer, and Celtic are reportedly interested in securing the services of the 36-year-old centre-back on a free transfer.

The former Sheffield United star is past his time, but the Englishman can still do a very good job in the Scottish Premiership for one or two more years, and one can understand why Celtic reportedly want him.

Just like the Hoops, Rangers could do with a central defender this summer, especially with Joe Worrall returning to his parent club Nottingham Forest after a season-long loan spell at Ibrox.

Jagielka would bring with him a wealth of experience and would enhance Rangers’ chances of competing with bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

If Celtic consider the departing Everton defender good enough for their team, then he must be good enough for Rangers.

Jagielka could be Rangers’ new David Weir. The former Scotland international central defender was 36 years of age when he joined Rangers after leaving Everton back in 2007, and during his time at Ibrox, he won the Scottish league three times, the Scottish Cup thrice and the Scottish Cup twice.

David Weir of Rangers looks on prior to the Betfred Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.
