James Gunn’s latest production, Brightburn, is heading to cinemas next week and it looks set to flip the superhero genre on its head
Brightburn is the latest production from recently fired and re-hired director of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn.
The film is his first work since directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 which released in 2017 and executive producing both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame and tells a rather unique story in a world of perfect do-good superheroes.
One question that seems to have raised its head among viewers is whether or not Brightburn is actually Superman?
What’s Brightburn all about?
Brightburn tells the surprisingly familiar story of how a baby falls to Earth in a spaceship, gets taken in by unsuspecting parents-to-be and grows up to develop superpowers.
It’s a tale we’ve heard plenty of times in a certain comic book and film series but this time with one notable twist that flips the genre on its head.
While every single superhero film we’ve had for at least the past 11 years has focused on well-meaning and noble heroes, we’ve never seen what might happen if that baby who fell from the sky grew up to be evil.
That’s what Brightburn is all about.
Is Brightburn Superman?
As we’ve tried to make clear, Brightburn’s story is almost identical to that of DC’s king of heroes, Superman.
Brightburn is sent to Earth in a spaceship as a baby, much like a certain baby sent to Earth from Krypton.
However, unlike Superman, who is raised to do good and becomes a beacon of hope for humanity, Brightburn takes a different and more destructive path.
So, while Brightburn is technically not Clark Kent’s Superman, his story and powers are very much inspired by the man of steel.
Brightburn, which has been produced by James Gunn, will be released in UK cinemas on June 19th, 2019.
