Premier League newcomers Aston Villa are reportedly keen to sign Jack Butland from Championship underachievers Stoke City.
Aston Villa do not feel that Jed Steer is ready for Premier League football and, according to Sky Sports, they have identified Stoke City’s Jack Butland as a £20 million replacement.
The 2018/19 campaign was a bizarre one for Steer. He started Villa’s opening game of the Championship campaign, a 3-1 win at Hull City, before being loaned out to Charlton Athletic.
Just a few months later however, Steer had been re-called midway through his season-long spell at The Valley before establishing himself as Villa’s number one, ahead of Norway international Orjan Nyland and £7 million January signing Lovre Kalinic.
But, although the 26-year-old played a major role as Dean Smith’s side sealed a return to the Premier League by beating Derby in the play-off final, Sky Sports claims that Steer is unlikely to be Villa’s number one when the new season kicks off.
Instead, they appear to be targeting a goalkeeper who has proven himself in the Premier League with Butland, an established England international, ticking plenty of boxes.
Stoke want at least £20 million for their reigning Player of the Year – but such a fee is unlikely to put off an Aston Villa side who are expected to make a splash in the transfer market.
