Sunderland fans think that Dylan McGeouch's inclusion on their retained list is a sign that Lee Cattermole will be leaving this summer, amid links with Sheffield Wednesday.
Cattermole is one of the Black Cats’ highest earners and their failure to earn promotion last term means that Jack Ross could be forced to take cost cutting measures.
And Sunderland fans feel that McGeouch being offered the chance to stay suggests that Cattermole could be close to moving to Hillsborough.
Happy for both as I think both can succeed at this level. Think there needs to be movement in the midfield if mcgeough is staying. Too many similar players. Wonder if catts is on his way out? Would like Mcgeough to get a good run of games.— Black Cat Yank (@M_Coan47) June 11, 2019
Looks like Oviedo and Cattermole are gone. Great news— jon (@Jonphillips7777) June 11, 2019
Wonder if McGeouch being kept on means something about Cattermole potentially departing #SAFC this summer— Michael Bowers (@MichaelBowers15) June 11, 2019
Feel him, Leadbitter and Cattermole are all similar. Can’t see all 3 staying.— SunderlandAFC Info (@SunderlandafcI) June 11, 2019
Agreed. Think something has to give. Catts most likely to move on.— Black Cat Yank (@M_Coan47) June 11, 2019
Reece James and McGeough both on the retained list. Happy for Hume and James to fight it out for lb spot. Hopefully Oviedo and Cattermole are shifted and we bring a centre mid in who is big and mobile to compliment what we already have #safc— Parkersafc (@Parkersafc) June 11, 2019
Ross didn’t play McGeouch at all regularly at Sunderland last season, with other options favoured.
The Scottish boss tended to play Max Power, Cattermole and Grant Leadbitter all ahead of McGeouch.
When McGeouch was offered chances, he did occasionally impress at Sunderland, with his passing ability above the level of many of his teammates.
If Cattermole does leave Sunderland this summer it will bring to an end his 10 year stay at the Stadium of Light.
