French publication L'Equipe reported earlier this week that Jurgen Klopp's side had moved up the gear by coming close to Lille's £71.1 million valuation of Pepe who has had an incredible season in France.
The 24-year-old scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists in the French top-flight and played a massive part in helping Lille finish the season as runners-up behind Paris Saint-Germain.
A player coming on the back of a spectacular campaign is good news for any club and Pepe would certainly thrive under a manager like Jurgen Klopp. However, Nicol seems unimpressed by what he has seen of the Ivorian and claimed that he doesn't look like a Liverpool player.
"I really don’t get this one. Yes he’s had a good season but he just doesn’t look like a Liverpool player to me. He’s a little unorthodox, he looks gangly. He has got it done, the stats bear that out," he said.
Nicol further went on to question the standard of Ligue 1 which is nowhere near how good the Premier League has been in recent years. PSG's domination in recent years has massively undervalued the league and the former Liverpool defender has his doubts about how good Pepe can be in England.
He continued: "Unfortunately it is Ligue 1 and I’m not a huge fan of Ligue 1, I don’t think the standard is particularly great. Before the season kicks off we know PSG have won the league. I’m not sure of this. I’m not sure where it’s coming from to be honest but I don’t think this guy fits in with Liverpool.”
Pepe's talent and ability on the ball is unquestionable but considering the quality of opposition that he has come up against so far, Nicol's points make a lot of sense and Liverpool should have their concerns over the big money deal this summer.
