Leeds United ex-player Rio Ferdinand has risked upsetting some of the Whites faithful by suggesting that Frank Lampard of Derby County handled the so-called Spygate situation with Marcelo Bielsa "very well", as quoted by the Daily Star.

Earlier last season, the two Championship promotion rivals were involved in an off-the-field war of words as it emerged that the Leeds coach had dispatched a club employee to observe a Rams training session ahead of their league encounter in January.

At the time, Lampard criticised Bielsa's actions and explanation that he had been implementing this approach at previous clubs, telling reporters: "On a sportsman's level, it's bad. If we are going to talk about culturally and say 'I did it somewhere else and it's fine', I don't believe that." (Goal.com)

Although the incident was largely forgotten within the clubs' ranks in the coming months, some animosity remained between the two sets of fans, who contested one of the two Championship playoff semi-final ties in May.

Lampard is now being linked with the Chelsea job amid speculation linking Maurizio Sarri to the Juventus job, and Ferdinand, his former England teammate, described him as "the perfect choice" to take the reins at Stamford Bridge, a club at which he holds legend status as a player.

"I think he has done a good job," the BT Sport pundit is quoted by the Daily Star as saying. "He has lowered the playing age at Derby - his remit before the season would have been around that.

"He hit all the nails on the head in that regard. But more than that the way Frank has conducted himself has been exemplary, especially in the situation with the Leeds manager, he handled that very well... he is the perfect choice (for Chelsea)."
