The Rams man has spent the last two seasons out on loan.
Derby County attacker Nick Blackman may still be under contract at Pride Park but the reaction of some fans of the club where he spent 2018-19 to his Twitter farewell message does not suggest that he is a man in form ready to burst back into the Rams first-team squad.
The 29-year-old has been on Derby's books since the summer of 2016, when he joined from Reading for a reported £3million (Transfermarkt), but his time at the East Midlands club has been anything but fruitful.
Blackman has not played for the Rams in two years, spending the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv and the season just gone at Spanish Segunda Division outfit Sporting Gijon.
At the latter, he made 17 appearances, scoring two goals over the course of a campaign hampered by injuries.
Blackman is back at Derby and, according to the Derby Telegraph, was one of several fringe players who signed 12-month extensions to their contracts earlier this season on vastly reduced terms compared to what they were on in the previous years, in order to protect their market values.
However, the outlet believes that Blackman will be released next month and will not return to the club for pre-season.
His farewell message to Gijon saw a number of parting shots by some fans:
One of Sporting’s worst signings in decades. Injured or in poor fitness for 80% of the season. An embarrasment for the club.— Javi (@pa_encerrar) 11 June 2019
