Aston Villa were also credited with interest in the Southampton academy product a year ago.

Aston Villa fans are reacting to reports linking their side with the Southampton left-back, Matt Targett.

According to The Sun, Villa are eyeing a bid for the £10million-rated Saint.

The newspaper claims Targett is Dean Smith‘s first choice candidate to come and add some competition in Aston Villa’s left-back position.

And the Southampton academy product was also a target for Smith’s predecessor as Aston Villa manager, Steve Bruce, according to The Mirror.

But a proposed loan move failed to materialise during last summer’s transfer window, and Targett went onto play 21 times for the Saints throughout 2018/19.

Having lost his place to Ryan Bertrand towards the end of the season, however, switching clubs might now be an option, with Fulham also being credited with interest in their former loan star.

And several of an Aston Villa persuasion would welcome Targett’s arrival…

But Aston Villa may have to bow to Southampton’s demands, with the Saints having tied him to a five-year contract in 2017.
