Liverpool have reportedly joined the race for Moussa Marega.
According to Foot Mercato, Marseille are struggling to afford the €30million (£27million) needed to sign Porto striker Moussa Marega – but Liverpool are now battling West Ham United for him.
Marega, 28, has made a name for himself in Portugal, not only impressing with Porto but also with Maritimo and Vitoria de Guimaraes, scoring goals for fun.
The Mali international hit 21 goals in all competitions this past season, and notched 11 assists too, with interest in his signature now mounting.
It’s believed that Marseille simply can’t afford Marega, but Liverpool have surprisingly entered the race, with West Ham long-term admirers as they look to bring him to the Premier League.
Marega to West Ham makes sense; they need strikers with Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez gone, and he’s of the level where a move to the London Stadium would be right for him at this stage in his career.
Liverpool being interested is a surprise though. Powerhouse Marega gave Virgil van Dijk some problems in their Champions League meetings earlier this year, granted, but would he improve the Liverpool squad?
He’s a big, physical and surprisingly quick striker, and whilst he may not be the most technically gifted, he leads the line well with strong link-up play and great work rate.
Off the bench, Marega may be an option for Liverpool, but he seems to be of a similar standing to Divock Origi in terms of quality, and splashing £27million on a 28-year-old striker seems unlikely for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
