Marvel's Avengers game: Does Black Widow look ugly?

Marvel Avengers Game Captain America And Black Widow

Square Enix have finally shown off Marvel's Avengers game, and there's only one thing people are discussing: does Black Widow look friggin' ugly?!

Rather than discussing the complexities of its true nature (is it a linear story-driven game or a cheap games-as-a-service ploy?), the gaming community over on Twitter is heckling Marvel's Avengers game for making Black Widow look ugly.

Square Enix unveiled their Avengers adaptation at their E3 2019 showcase this morning in the United Kingdom, and - as you can imagine - the trailer was greeted with an ungodly amount of high-pitch squealing.

However, once the adrenaline rush faded away and gamers stopped watching the trailer with rose-tinted glasses, they quickly realised that something was very off. And it's not just Black Widow.

Although Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics' premise of civilization blaming the Avengers for a San Francisco catastrophe is intriguing, it was impossible to shake off the uncanny valley feeling when looking at Earth's mightiest heroes.

Thanks to us having seen Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson embody Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow for over ten-years, it's only natural that we'd be less receptive to portrayals that sort of resemble the MCU but not really.

Square Enix seemingly wanted the characters to be likened to their MCU counterparts, but they were clearly not allowed and - as a result - the Avengers come across as poor cosplayers.

Bruce Banner and Tony Stark are relatively decent, but Captain America is bland and looks worse than my dad, and Black Widow looks like Lord Farquad from Shrek.

Now I'm no Tom Cruise as I was whacked more than once with the ugly stick when I was a baby, but Square Enix's Black Widow is definitely no Scarlett Johansson.

In addition to Shrek's Lord Farquad, Crystal Dyamics' Black Widow has been likened to the ugly stepsister and Prince Charming.

Others pointed out that it's impossible to get over how ugly she looks, meanwhile most people said she resembles Maria Hill (sorry Maria).

It is jarring how the Avengers look like cosplayers wearing the movies costumes and wigs, but - hopefully - we'll become more accustomed to the designs and voices when spending time with the game through cutscenes and gameplay.

Either that, or Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal fix the faces.
