The Sun on Sunday has named Cattermole as a target for Bruce's father, Steve, but claims his wages could prove a stumbling block for Sheffield Wednesday.

The 31-year-old was signed by Bruce Snr at both Wigan Athletic and Sunderland, for a combined fee of around £10 million.

And his existing contract, which has two years left to run, was signed when Sunderland were still a Premier League club.

According to The Sun, however, Cattermole's wages dropped to £40,000-a-week after the Mackems' relegation to the English Football League in 2017.

Sheffield Wednesday have spent the past few campaigns battling to stay within the EFL's profit and sustainability rules, but cleared six high-earning senior players from their books at the start of the summer.
