According to a report from French outlet La Provence, West Ham are interested in signing Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson with the Ligue 1 side needing to sell to balance the books this summer.
Manuel Pellegrini's side have already offloaded a number of fringe players at the start of this window, and have managed to make a couple of signings, with David Martin and Roberto arriving at the London Stadium to bolster the goalkeeping ranks.
But it appears that the Irons now have their eye on a marquee addition. La Provence reports that West Ham are one of the Premier League sides to have scouted Sanson regularly over the last year, and they could now make a move with Marseille needing to sell.
The 24-year-old is the kind of all-round midfielder who could really capture the imagination if he moves to the Hammers this summer. He scored five goals and provided three assists in Ligue 1, but is a lot more creative than those statistics suggest.
Sanson also has the tenacity to become a hero with the Irons. He collected nine yellow cards in the top flight this past season and loves to get stuck in, but is also more than happy to drive forward with the ball at his feet.
With La Provence noting that Tottenham wanted the former France under-21 international last summer, it would be a real statement from West Ham if they could win the race for Sanson during the coming months. With Marseille open to a sale, perhaps the door is open for a stunning move.
