Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of Europe's best right-backs this season.

Yet he didn't make the team for last night's UEFA Nations League semi-final with Holland.

 

England lost the game, with Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker delivering a poor performance in his place.

This was a disappointment for England, but a positive for Alexander-Arnold's long-term prospects.

He was left on the bench for much of the World Cup last summer for Kieran Trippier.

Walker has had plenty of chances himself and his latest error, capped with his own goal, could have just played Alexander-Arnold into the team.

Gareth Southgate may have been being kind to Alexander-Arnold by resting him after his Champions League heroics.

Keeping him free from injury did him a favour,  and sitting this one out has worked his way too.

Alexander-Arnold needs a run in the England team now, and last night's game only served to speed that up.
