Wolverhampton Wanderers finished in seventh place in the Premier League last season, with Aston Villa looking to do the same.

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has told the Daily Record that they want to emulate Wolverhampton Wanderers in their first season back in the Premier League.

Villa earned promotion through the play offs by beating Derby County at Wembley.

Dean Smith’s side have been given the blueprint for Premier League success by Wolves, who finished in seventh place in their first season back in the top flight.

And McGinn claims that Villa want to have a similar impact as Wolves after coming up.

“I think we have to be realistic but have some sort of ambition. You see certain teams come in and they change a little or a lot – some do well, some don’t,” the midfielder said.

“We want to emulate Wolves but at the same time we need to be realistic and know how difficult it will be.

“We have lost a lot of boys out of contract or going back on loan but the club will be working hard to bring in replacements.

“Everybody in the squad is aware we need to up our game to prove we can be Premier League players.”

Villa have considerable funds to spend, but rivalling Wolves’ season will be tough.

Nuno’s men put together a remarkable campaign to finish in seventh place.

Villa will certainly be relying in McGinn hitting form if they are to break into the top half.

The £2.75 million man (Scottish Sun) only signed for Villa last year, but he has quickly become one of the most integral players in Smith’s side.
