Rafael Benitez reportedly wants to raid Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and lure veteran defender Scott Dann to Newcastle United.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez wants to bring Scott Dann to St James’ Park, according to the Sun (5 June, page 52), but the Magpies will have to cough up £6 million for the Crystal Palace defender.

A 32-year-old centre-back, Dann has made almost 150 appearances in Palace colours since joining from Blackburn Rovers back in 2013 though only ten of those came last season as he struggled with a long-term knee injury.

But with Newcastle needing cover at the back in light of Florian Lejeune’s continued absence, the Sun believes that Dann could be on his way to Tyneside if Benitez gets his way.

Whether he will, however, remains to be seen. Current Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is unlikely to be too thrilled about the prospect of paying £6 million for a veteran, battle-scarred centre-back.

However, if the much-publicised takeover goes through, Benitez could be given far more authority to bring in players of his own choosing – regardless of their age.

Liverpool-born Dann also played Premier League football under Alex McLeish at Birmingham City and he has been Crystal Palace’s official club captain for the last three years.
