Jonathan Klinsmann was heavily linked with Glasgow Rangers when he decided to leave Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin.

Rangers must raise their game if they want to sign Jonathan Klinsmann this summer. Because, right now, all roads appear to lead to Austria or Switzerland for the talented American goalkeeper.

The Scottish Sun reported in May that Rangers were looking to bring the son of Germany, Bayern Munich and Tottenham legend Jurgen Klinsmann to Ibrox, potentially as a long-term successor for 36-year-old number one Allan McGregor.

And, speaking to Bild about a fortnight ago, Klinsmann Jr confirmed that he would be leaving Hertha Berlin when his contract expires in July, expressing a desire to reach the ‘next level’ – something he obviously felt he couldn’t do so far down the pecking order at the Olimpiastadion.

As it stands, however, Klinsmann appears set to make the short trip from Germany to Austria or Switzerland.

Because Kicker is claiming that there are two real options for the USA youth star – Austria Vienna or St Gallen.

The former finished fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga last season while St Gallen ended up in a disappointing sixth in the Swiss Super League.

So if Rangers want to bring in a highly-rated goalkeeper with a really big name, they will have to move pretty fast.
