Sunderland boss Jack Ross is set to stay on at the Stadium of Light for another season, despite missing out on promotion.

Peterborough United co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that Sunderland boss Jack Ross was raving about Marcus Maddison at the end of last season.

Sunderland and Posh drew 1-1 back in April, in a game which effectively ended the Black Cats hopes of automatic promotion.

After the game, Ross was very complimentary of Maddison, who gave Sunderland’s defence a tough test on the day.

“I think it was Jack Ross who said to Darren [Ferguson] ‘what a player he is, we looked at him in the summer and heard about his reputation’,” MacAnthony revealed.

“Darren said to him ‘what reputation, I’ve managed him twice and never had a problem with him’.”

MacAnthony has already gone on record to rule out Sunderland signing Maddison this summer, despite Ross’s admiration for the attacker.

Posh want to challenge Sunderland for promotion this season in League One and Maddison will be key to their push.

Maddison scored eight goals and claimed 16 assists in League One last term, as he put together another impressive campaign at London Road.

Sunderland are yet to make a signing since their loss in the play off final, but are expected to be active in the transfer market over the coming weeks.
