Ashley Williams has told BBC Sport that he is 'excited' about what the future holds ahead of his Everton exit.

The Wales international is set to leave Everton on a free transfer this month.

Williams, who cost the Toffees £12 million in 2016 [BBC Sport], spent last season on loan with Stoke City after it was made clear that he was not part of Marco Silva's plans at Goodison Park.

The 34-year-old, who turns 35 in August, is in the twilight of his playing career, but the former Swansea City centre-back remains enthusiastic about whatever comes next.

"It's the first time I have got to the end of a contract in a long time," he told BBC Sport. "It's not something I'm worried about - I am just excited to see what comes up.

"My agent says we have got good options abroad and here."

It's fair to say that Williams was never a fan favourite among the Everton faithful. They signed him when he was already over 30 and perhaps had his move to Merseyside come a few years before, things might've been different.

But it's been abundantly clear for a long time that he never had much of a long-term future with the Toffees and it'll be interesting to see where the veteran - who has 85 caps for his country - will play next.
