The Lion King has been reimagined for 2019 audiences, but who are hyenas Azizi and Kamari and where's Ed?
A remake of The Lion King was inevitable, but new hyenas Azizi and Kamari have many scratching their heads. Also, where's stupid Ed? It may have appeared a very faithful remake when the trailer dropped, but as you can tell, there have been some changes.
The 1994 animation stands mighty proud as one of the most acclaimed and beloved Disney movies ever made; it's a modern classic in every sense. The songs, characters, heart and heavy themes make it irresistible to both children and adults, and it's no surprise why many regard it as the perfect family film. So, what's different with the remake?
The Lion King 2019 changes
Firstly, there's been a huge leap from animation to live action; although, it's of course very heavy on the CGI side. As far as the visuals go though, the film looks absolutely astonishing.
Its predecessor was helmed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. However, this time we have the familiar Jon Favreau sweeping in to give this classic tale a new lease of life. He previously directed another live-action remake for Disney, The Jungle Book. Needless to say, it looks like he has yet another huge hit on his hands.
One of the biggest changes has been to the voice cast, although the likes of James Earl Jones (Mufasa) are returning. New additions include Donald Glover (Simba), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Beyoncé (Nala) and more.
Who are the hyenas?
Another considerable change has seen the iconic hyenas undergo some alterations.
In the original, the three central hyenas were Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), Banzai (Cheech Marin) and Ed (Jim Cummings) - yes, the particularly nutty one.
However, Shenzi is the only one which has kept the original name and will be voiced by Florence Kasumba (Black Panther). Interestingly, Ed has been renamed Azizi and Banzai is now called Kamari; they will be voiced by Eric André (Disenchantment) and Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu) respectively.
Hopefully, this talented new cast will have just as much fun with the characters as those did with the 1994 incarnations. They're certainly a talented bunch! So don't worry - they hyenas are still here.
