There have been some changes, but is Simba gay in The Lion King? Let’s take a look.

Many have questioned whether Simba is gay in the forthcoming live-action remake of The Lion King and there’s been some slight confusion. When taking the 1994 Disney classic into consideration, it may seem an odd question to ask, but there is a reason people are pondering it.

Of course, Disney has done wonders across the realm of blockbuster representation, whether it be with their Marvel output or otherwise. However, Simba’s sexuality would be a pretty noteworthy deviation from The Lion King‘s animated predecessor. So, let’s dig a little deeper.

Same story, new vision

As you’ll be aware, Disney has released numerous remakes of classic properties lately. We’ve seen The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and more reimagined for new audiences, but none have been approached with more excitement than The Lion King

The Jungle Book‘s Jon Favreau has helmed the project, and such popular names as Donald Glover (Simba), Beyoncé (Nala), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa) are all on board to help sculpt something special for summer audiences.

Sure, the cinematic style and voice cast has changed, but has it stopped there?

Is Simba gay in The Lion King?

Many fans have felt uncertain about Simba’s sexual identity in the upcoming film, particularly since many believe that Woody may be bisexual in Toy Story 4

It turns out that the recent doubt stems back to an April Fools joke from 2017; as reported by Snopes, it was Pink News which orchestrated the prank, claiming that Simba would be gay in the remake. It’s false.

Well, that’s that

So, it appears to be a prank which spiralled a little out of hand. Sometimes an April Fools can cause quite the confusion – this is another classic case.

It looks like Nala is still set to be Simba’s significant other.
