The Express & Star reports that Aston Villa are considering an improved offer for Etheridge, after seeing an £8 million approach rejected by Cardiff.
And with their side set to make a significant profit on a player they signed for free two years ago, while also having a ready-made replacement on board in the shape of Alex Smithies, the following Cardiff fans wouldn't begrudge Etheridge a move.
Neil Etheridge is a fab fab keeper but if that £8 million is to be reinvested in the squad, it’s not a bad shout. He also deserves to play at the highest level and we have a thoroughly capable replacement ready made in Smithies.— Alex (@afranklin27) June 4, 2019
Honestly, tell Villa to add a couple of million to it and I'd let Etheridge go. Smithies could be number one and we could use that £10m elsewhere. Etheridge is a great shot stopper but his Kicking is League 1 at best. Given that we signed him for free 2 season ago, £10m is fine— *StevieDE83* (@StevieDE83) June 3, 2019
£10m+ bid for etheridge? Might have to take it, considering we've got smithies too who's a great keeper I think it's a good money tbh as much as I love etheridge— OᗯEᑎ ᗷᗩTᑕᕼ (@Batchelor1Ow) June 4, 2019
sell him we have smithies and we can invest in positions we need— Ryan O'Dell (@RyanODell75) June 4, 2019
If we were to sell Etheridge would anyone be tempted to take Marshall back on a free?— Ben Price (@thebenprice) June 3, 2019
I’d sell Etheridge for £12-15M, give Smithies the gloves and bring back Dave the Save for competition.#preseasonchampmanager— Phil Weston (@PhilWeston75) June 3, 2019
Joining Aston Villa would see Etheridge reunited with the manager, Dean Smith, and goalkeeper coach, Neil Cutler, he worked with at Walsall.
The 29-year-old previously credited Cutler with "taking his game to another level".
Aston Villa have no shortage of options in Etheridge's position, with Jed Steer, Lovre Kalinic and Orjan Nyland sharing responsibilities last season.
Should Cardiff sell Etheridge to Aston Villa?
