Rangers will be looking to bring another striker to Ibrox this summer.

Ayr United manager Ian McCall is seen during the Betfred Scottish League Cup Quarter Final match between Rangers and Ayr United on September 26, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers should sign a striker this summer, and some fans believe that Ayr United's Lawrence Shankland should be brought to Ibrox.

The Gers are likely to offload Kyle Lafferty this summer, so adding another striking option would be wise, especially with no guarantees over Alfredo Morelos's future.

A bargain option to support Jermain Defoe and Morelos would make sense, and Shankland certainly ticks some boxes for Steven Gerrard's side this summer.

Shankland, 23, smashed 34 goals for Ayr United this past season, and whilst he's only in the second tier and would face a huge step up to Rangers, his availability is appealing.

Shankland – a boyhood Rangers fan – is out of contract in a matter of weeks, meaning he'd be able to join the Gers on a free transfer if they're interested.

Now, Ayr United boss Ian McCall may have just dropped a hint. McCall has told BBC Sport that Shankland has an offer from a big club in Scotland, where you must be 'really mentally strong' to succeed.

“One of them, it's a club in Scotland and you need to be really mentally strong," said McCall. “That's something I think Lawrence has, but the only way you find that is if you go through it. You can't predict that, it's something you have to live through to find out if you have it. There are a couple of pretty sizeable clubs in England where I'm pretty sure he would play. One in particular would suit him, a sleeping giant type club. He has three now to choose from. If his mentality is as good as it can be, which he'll need if he goes to a big club, he can be as good as any of them (strikers in the Scotland squad),” he added.

Whilst there's a certain level of pressure with the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibernian, those comments would point to either Celtic or Rangers, and the Gers bringing in a boyhood fan would make some sense.

Would Shankland have much to think about if his boyhood club wanted him though? Well, maybe if there are major clubs in England pursuing his signature, as he'll know that first-team football at Rangers may not be guaranteed. After McCall's comments, Shankland is definitely a name for Gers fans to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
