The Mail report Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a move for Rangers captain James Tavernier.
Tavernier is a key part of Steven Gerrard's side and Rangers would demand a high fee for the right-back.
One argument in favour of Rangers selling Tavernier is that they can pick up a quality replacement for free. One just released by Aston Villa.
The Mail report Hutton is one of eight players who has been released by Villa after they won promotion to England's Premier League.
It ends an eight year stint at Villa for Hutton, who has had three spells out on loan, and fought back to establish himself in the team, making more than 30 appearances last season. Villa feel it is time to move on.
If Rangers did cash in on Tavernier, signing Hutton on a free transfer would be shrewd business from Rangers.
Hutton starred at Ibrox between 2003 and 2008, before making a move to Tottenham.
At 34, he would only be a short term solution for Rangers, but he would be a solid one, and fill the gap left by Tavernier.
