Should Leeds look at Tommy Elphick?

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa watches on during the first half

Leeds United could and probably should sign a couple of centre-backs this summer.

Marcelo Bielsa manager of Leeds Utd shouts instructions to his players during the Sky Bet Championship Play off Semi Final 1st leg match between Derby County and Leeds United at the Pride...

Well, Marcelo Bielsa is staying at Leeds United and now Andrea Radrizzani must give him some new players.

Leeds confirmed earlier this week that the Argentine would be staying at Elland Road, having come so close to Premier League promotion this past season.

But reinforcements are key and although there's a number of positions which need strengthening, they badly need centre-backs.

Nobody is going to pin the Whites' playoff failure on the error made by captain Liam Cooper and goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

Cooper had a brilliant season, as did Pontus Jansson for the most part, but alternatives are so thin and Leeds desperately need to bring in at least two players to compete with them.

Should one of them be Tommy Elphick?

Aston Villa signed the former Bournemouth star for £3 million in 2016 [BBC Sport] and have just released him, meaning that he's available on a free.

United won't have millions and millions to spend this summer, with Radrizzani anticipating a 'difficult' transfer window, which means Bielsa and Victor Orta might have to scour the bargain basement.

Interestingly, Orta reportedly wanted the 31-year-old back in January of 2018 [The Sun, 01-23, page 55] and although he isn't good enough to start, he's definitely good enough for the squad and Leeds should consider him.
