If a Madonna biopic is on the cards, they may want to consider these actresses for the lead.

There are so many talented actresses working today, but casting a Madonna biopic wouldn’t be easy. With the success of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, it looks like Dexter Fletcher could craft more celebrity portraits in the near future, but what should he tackle? With infinite possibilities, it’s hard to determine which musical icon deserves the treatment next. However, it looks like he’s set his sights on a project already.

In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the director said this: “I’d do Madonna! That sounds like a real rollercoaster ride! It would be extraordinary… I don’t know how happy she’d be about that… But what an extraordinary life that would be. If I was to tackle any other icon like that, it would be her. She’s extraordinary.”

Although nothing’s concrete, fans are pretty excited about the idea of it all. So, who could do it justice?

Lily Collins

All of the actresses put forth here are terrific in their own right. Lily Collins could not only nail the look of a young Madonna, but she also boasts a range which would enable her to explore the pop star’s many levels.

She has recently impressed audiences in the likes of Tolkien and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile; the latter truly showcases her ability to convey such emotional depth. Considering she’s on the rise at the moment, it would be a great decision to give her the role of Madonna, which would no doubt be her most substantial to date.

Maika Monroe

Of all five choices, Maike Monroe is a personal favourite for the part. As was the case with Rocketman, we expect Fletcher would want to chronicle the star’s rise to fame and formative years in the spotlight. Monroe is in her mid-twenties and would definitely be able to nail Madonna during these years.

She’s yet another actress that fans want to see more of, and she has a good few projects in the pipeline already. After turning in phenomenal performances in It Follows, The Guest and more, it would be great to see her step up and take on a more demanding role such as this. There’s a lot of potential here.

Imogen Poots

Who wouldn’t want to see more Imogen Poots movies? As it stands, she’s a very versatile performer who feels sadly underappreciated today. If you compare her work in the ultraviolent Green Room to that in cute rom-com That Awkward Moment, there’s little similarity.

If she were cast as Madonna, we could expect her to disappear into the role seamlessly. For all of the actresses listed yet, it would perhaps be their most significant turn to date, but Collins, Monroe and Poots all possess a quality we cannot wait for more audiences to recognise. This could be the role of a lifetime; after all, Rami Malek won the Oscar for his Freddie Mercury portrayal and Taron Egerton has been praised no end for his Elton John portrait.

Saoirse Ronan

Arguably – very much so – Saoirse Ronan is the most accomplished actress featured on this list. She may be the least obvious choice of the five to tackle the Queen of Pop, but her exceptional talent still makes her a no-brainer.

Born in New York City to Irish parents, Ronan’s parents moved back to Dublin with her when she was three. However, this hasn’t stopped her from excelling in a range of roles, as she encapsulated the American teen in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. Turning out great work in Lost River, Brooklyn and more, Madonna would simply be the next evolution in her career; we have great faith in her ability to smash it.

Shailene Woodley

Again, Shailene Woodley is an actress who could emulate Madonna’s glow. Audiences have praised her performance in TV series Big Little Lies. However, she’s impressed us in a number of cinematic roles too, from The Fault in Our Stars, The Descendants, White Bird in a Blizzard and the Divergent series.

One can’t help but feel Woodley is destined to blow us away in the near future. It’s not that she hasn’t turned out great work up to now, but we’re yet to see her truly amaze us – we know she can. There’s reason to believe her depiction of Madonna could be something special.

Shailene Woodley attends the “Big Little Lies” Season 2 Premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center on May 29, 2019 in New York City.

As asserted, all five actresses would be welcome casting decisions. If the project does go ahead and one of these is selected, we’ll be incredibly excited to bask in the results.
