Newcastle United have contacted a potential successor to Rafa Benitez's successor according to a report.

According to a report from Calcio Mercato, Newcastle United and Sampdoria have enquired about Gennaro Gattuso's availability in the summer.

Gattuso was sacked by the Rossoneri earlier this week after the club finished outside the top four.

The Italian will leave the club with a decent record of just 20 losses in 82 games. But could he replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle?

The Spaniard's contract with the Magpies runs out this summer and Newcastle are yet to convince him to sign a new deal. Benitez has been hugely influential at St James' Park over the last three years and losing him would be a massive blow.

However, Gattuso could well be a gamble that would pay off for Newcastle next season.

The Italian took over a poor Milan side 18 months ago and worked wonders in his first season. As disappointing as his second season was at the San Siro, Gattuso deserves massive credit for the discipline he brought in and he could do the same at Newcastle.

Like he was on the pitch, Gattuso is aggressive and fearless as a manager, and his presence on the touchline has proved to be infectious and has brought out the best in his players.

Keeping hold of Benitez has to be Newcastle's number one priority but, if an agreement cannot be reached, Gattuso should be considered to take charge of the Magpies next campaign.
