The Denmark international, who featured for his country at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, was heavily linked with a move to the Riverside 12 months ago too with Tony Pulis apparently keen to bring Knudsen to the North East.
And the left-back himself admitted to the Northern Echo back in November that he was aware of interest from Middlesbrough, and then suggested that he was disappointed to see the move fail to materialise.
“There was something concrete in it (Middlesbrough’s interest)," he said. "But sometimes things do not come into place as you please.”
But with Ipswich relegated from the Championship and with Knudsen set to become a free agent in the very near future, the door has swung open for Middlesbrough to belatedly get their man.
Knudsen could provide competition for George Friend at left-back if he moves to Middlesbrough, with the club forced to play winger Marcus Tavernier in a more defensive role in recent months.
