Former Newcastle midfielder Abeid reportedly wants to return to England but could he be heading to the Championship with Leeds United?

Former Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid could be on his way back to England this summer, according to France Football, but could Leeds United be his destination?

The Algerian international spent seven years at St James’ Park at the start of his career and he caught the eye with his composure and impressive passing range, even if he made just 21 appearances for the Magpies.

Now 26, Abeid is playing in France for Dijon, but not for much longer. Dijon finished third from bottom in Ligue 1 and face a relegation play-off. And, whatever happens, Abeid will walk away when his contract expires at the end of this season according to France Football.

And the report adds that the seven-time international has his heart set on a return to British shores.

This comes just a few months after France Football linked Leeds United with a move for Abeid, whose technical ability and tenacious style could make him a perfect fit for Marcelo Bielsa – should the Argentine remain at Elland Road after all.

Leeds will be playing Championship football next season after they were beaten by Derby County in the play-off semi finals.
