Ron Gourley is hardly the most popular man in Reading right now.
According to Goal, the club’s former chief executive decided against tying down academy graduate Danny Loader to a long-term contract during his time at the Madejski.
But since then, the 18-year-old has gone from strength to strength with Premier League clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves, Southampton and Leicester City expressing an interest. And with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, Reading could be forced to sell one of their most exciting talents for as little as £3 million.
Goal adds that there is interest from Germany and France too while even Serie A champions Juventus have expressed an interest in Loader, an U17 World Cup winner with England.
But what do Reading fans think about this whole rather unfortunate situation? Well, with just 12 months left on Loader’s contract, it seems that the majority would be happy to cash in on the teenager now to avoid losing him on a free.
Loader did catch the eye last season but, with just one goal in 21 Championship games to his name, it is not like The Royals are about to bid farewell to a talisman.
Why would it be devastating? He's played 23 games for us and scored 1 goal? Yes he has undoubted potential but how could you turn down 4+ million with the possibility of sell on fees and add ons for an 18 year old with 1 year left? Would be disappointing but far from devastating— Matt Lansley (@mattlansley97) May 23, 2019
I agree, if he isn’t looking like signing a contract - cash in.— Talk Reading (@TalkReading) May 23, 2019
Hardly burst on to the scene. He’s done well at U23 level. That’s it. Looked lost for the most part in the first team, but for one superb goal at the end of the season. He’s a prospect. So was Hector and Tishibola.— Jamie Gorman (@OfficialJGorman) May 23, 2019
I’m right behind him. Just saying, he hasn’t burst anything. He’s a good prospect tho. He wanted away last summer. He’ll push for a move again if the interest in the PL is real. Hopefully Arsenal get him and we swap for Emi. Or get him in a loan back.— Jamie Gorman (@OfficialJGorman) May 23, 2019
I don't want him to go, but if it means we can sign one of the loanees then i say sell him.— Tom S (@Thomas_C245) May 23, 2019
Re: Loader leaving for possibly Arsenal. Take £4m plus Martinez and loan Loader back for the season. Ideally wouldn’t lose him but we need to raise funds as per FFP troubles, and we want Oliveira which will cost! #readingfc #rfc #afc #gunners— Jumpers For Goalposts (@_Wallsy_) May 23, 2019
Given the situation I’d make what we can and get a sell on fee in there. Not ideal but don’t think he’s quite ready to lead the front line FT.— Ian Frampton (@iframpton) May 23, 2019
