Marc Cucurella enjoyed a fine La Liga season on loan at Eibar from Barcelona; now the Premier League reportedly beckons with Newcastle United.

The 2018/19 season will go down as one of the most humiliating in Real Madrid’s recent history. And being torn apart by a 20-year-old Barcelona loanee was a particular low-light.

In November, Madrid travelled to the tiny Ipurua stadium to take on plucky Eibar. And the smallest club in La Liga stepped up to the challenge in style, battering the then-champions of Europe 3-0 in front of their 7,000-strong crowd and sealing a famous 3-0 win.

And no one was in any doubt about the star of the show; Marc Cucurella.

Lining up at left-back, you would have been forgiven for wondering if Marcelo swapped sides before the game with the poodle-haired Spaniard producing a strikingly swashbuckling performance to rip Real apart.

He set up one goal with a typically pinpoint cross and played a major role in the other two. This felt like a glimpse of the future from a player who had spent the previous six years honing his trade in Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.

And it is no wonder that Newcastle United, among many others, are interested.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle have been keeping close tabs on Cucurella, who has also caught the eye of AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

The Magpies have been crying out for a top quality young left-back for years and they may have just found the prime candidate. If Cucurella can prove that remarkable display against Real Madrid was just the beginning, he could be one of Newcastle’s more inspired signings for years.
