It's a signing that would transform Newcastle United, but can Mike Ashley pull off a deal for Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata this summer?
The Sun have claimed that Rafa Benitez is keen on signing Mata on a free transfer this summer, with his contract at Old Trafford set to expire at the end of next month.
It is said that if Benitez stays on at St James' Park then he wants to reunite with the Spanish playmaker and wants the Newcastle board to change their philosophy of not wanting to sign older players.
For a number of years now, the Toon Army faithful have been crying out for some ambition from the board, a player that can light up the club, well Mata can do just that if he puts pen-to-paper with the North East outfit.
At 31-years-old, Mata won't be producing the best form of his career, but there is no doubt that he has the capabilities of taking Newcastle to the next level.
During his time with the Spain national team, Valencia, Chelsea and Man Utd, Mata has won 10 trophies [transfermarkt] and he can bring that experience to St James' Park with him.
Not only that, the serial cup winner would also provide Benitez with that creative spark in the middle of the park and would, as a result, make the Magpies are a more attractive team to watch.
There are a number of talented players at Newcastle from Miguel Almiron to Ayoze Perez. Players like that can take their own game to the next level if they are training with someone of Mata's calibre on a regular basis.
Either way, if Newcastle can pull off a deal for Mata then it'll no doubt excite fans and help them push up the league next season.
