Erkan Eyibil has been warned about making a move to England this summer by Mainz’s youth chief as Bild links Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion with a bid for the so-called ‘new Mesut Ozil’.
Like Arsenal’s number 10, Eyibil is a gifted, left-footed attacking midfielder who is capable of carving apart an opposition defence at will. The Turkish-born forward, who has played for Germany at youth level, has a remarkable record for Mainz’s reserves too with 15 goals in 19 games this season.
Bild reports that Eyibil has emerged as a target for Midland rivals Aston Villa and West Brom with his contract due to expire in 2020.
Premier League duo West Ham and Newcastle United are also keeping close tabs on the teenager, according to Turkish Football.
But Volker Kersting, the head of Mainz’s academy, believes that Eyibil would be making a mistake if he swaps Germany for England before he has had a chance to fully develop.
"I am relatively relaxed. The boy knows what he wants – to become a professional at Mainz 05. England would be too early for him,” Kersting said.
If Aston Villa beat Derby County in the Championship play-off final on Monday, however, Eyibil might be tempted by the idea of making the move.
Newcastle and West Ham, though, might struggle to offer him a first-team role straight away.
